PocketWizard MiniTT1 and FlexTT5
The PocketWizard MiniTT1 transmitter and FlexTT5 transeiver are radio triggers for the Canon camera line that support wireless connection of remote strobes and speedlights. Unlike prior radio triggers, the Mini and Flex support ControlTL technology which allows ETTL control of up to 3 groups of remote speedlites.
Initail testing of the triggers using the MiniTT1 connected to my Canon 20D's hot shoe and the FexTT5 connected to my Novatron studio strobes, using Basic Trigger Mode, went flawlessly. The triggers performed flawlessly up to the maximum sync speed of the camera (1/250).
Problems were encountered using the more advanced ControlTL functionality. The MiniTT1 failed to see the trigger signals from the camera's hot shoe. The problem was traced back to a bad connection between the MiniTT1 and the hot shoe. After cleaning the contacts on both the MiniTT1 and the camera hot shoe, the ControlTL functionality worked perfectly.
The MiniTT1 annd FlexTT5 are not limited by the constraints of the optical trigger system supported by Canon cameras and Speedlites. Unlike with the optical trigger technology, the flashes do not require line of sight between the camera and the Speedlites. These radio triggers will also work in bright sunlight and have a much longer range.
So far, so good. More testing is required to explore all the functionality that these triggers provide.
