Around the Grove

Blizzard of 2010

The Highway 402 corridor from Sarnia to London was hit with a severe winter storm that shut down the highway and stranded 300 people on the hiway.  High winds and blowing snow created whiteout conditions and massive snow drifts.  The storm that started on Decembers 12 is still causing disruptions in the area.

Sections of the 402 remain closed as snow removal efforts continue.  Lambton County declared an emergency on Tuesday morning and have asked the military to assist with rescue operations.  The military provided helicopters, planes and all terrain vehicles to reach areas that were snowed in.

Remembrance Day

I attended the Sarnia 2010 Remembrance Day ceremony at Veterans' Park.  The great weather brought out large crowd to watch the laying of the wreaths.  Close to a thousand people gathered around the Cenotaph at the 11th hour to honour Canada's war veterans.  Padre, Reverend Gord Simmons told those on hand we must never forget.

Sarnia's Remembrance procession steps off from the Royal Canadian Legion this morning around 10:30, proceeding south on Front to George, then south on Christina Street to Wellington and the cenotaph at Veteran's Park in time for the 11th hour service.

Al sees the light

Jo mentioned that she wanted me to take down the plastic diffuser for the fluorescent light fixture in the hallway so that she could clean it..  Sounds easy right?

AV Cabinet

I decided that a built-in A/V cabinet would be a good idea for the basement family room.  The cabinet is 20" W x 40"H x 24"D.  The cabinet is made from 3/4" MDF with all joints glued, screwed and aligned with biscuits.  The upper and lower shelves can be adjusted up or down in 1" increments.

New roof

The roofing contractor finished the roof today.  I think the new colour works well.

April 24

Picked up yhe ceiling tiles for the suspended ceiling.   The decision to install a suspended ceiling was based on some pre-existing electrical junction boxes that would require rewireing other areas of the house to eliminate.  The suspended ceiling will allow access to the ceiling area in the future for any services that need to be worked on.
The ceiling tiles are made of MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard) are are meant to be painted or stained.  The ceiling grid is a system called CeilingMax, a new product is surface mounted to the joists (doesn't require a drop between the joists and the tiles).
